What to do at the scene of a car accident

Being in a car accident can be very stressful. If you find yourself in a motor vehicle accident the first thing you should do is to check to make sure that everyone is safe. If anyone is injured call an ambulance and have the emergency personnel check over everyone involved in the accident. You might want to attend the hospital or check in with your family doctor as well.

You should exchange information with all of the other drivers involved. If you are able, it’s always a good idea to take photos of the vehicles, plates, registrations and licences of drivers involved. See if there are any witnesses and get their contact information. You could even get them to text you a description of what they saw. Ask if any witnesses have dash camera footage of the accident. If any of the drivers are not co-operating call the police.

It’s also beneficial to take photos of the position of the vehicles involved. Very often we receive photos of clients of damage only, but if you can take photos of the positions of vehicles, or where they are in relation to the intersection or the other vehicles, the photos may become useful at a later time when determining liability. Remember to also take photos of the accident location, including intersection and traffic lights.
